A week in Lisbon, a long weekend in Paris or a summer fortnight on a Greek island all start the same way: you land, switch off flight mode and reach for maps, ride-hailing apps and the group chat. For UK travellers, the question is whether that first message will cost extra. Choosing a SIM only plan with EU roaming included means your UK data, calls and texts work across Europe the moment you arrive, with no daily roaming fee to remember.
This guide explains how EU roaming works on a no-contract SIM, then compares four 30 day plans by how much data you can use while you are away.
How EU Roaming Works on These Plans
Since 17 July 2023, every pay as you go and pay monthly plan in this range has included EU roaming as standard. That covers 30 destinations in the European Roaming Zone, including France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Iceland. Your phone connects to a local partner network automatically when you arrive, and you can still call 112 for emergency services free of charge anywhere in the EU.
The detail that matters most is the roaming data cap. Each plan lets you use part of its UK data allowance in Europe, and that cap is what decides how comfortable your trip will be. The table below compares the four EU roaming SIM deals side by side.
| Plan | UK data | EU roaming data | Standard price | First month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK Plan Smart | 5GB | 5GB | £5 / 30 days | £3.50 |
| National Plus | 30GB | 12GB | £10 / 30 days | £5 |
| UK Plan Super Extra | 75GB | 12GB (EU and India) | £15 / 30 days | £7.50 |
| UK Plan Unlimited | Unlimited | 35GB (EU and India) | £25 / 30 days | £12.50 |
Four Plans for Trips Across Europe
UK Plan Smart: Short City Breaks
The entry plan gives you 5GB of data, 1,000 UK minutes and texts and 100 international minutes for 30 days. All 5GB can be used in the EU, which is plenty for maps, messaging and a few photo uploads on a three or four day city break. It lists at £5 per 30 days and is currently £3.50 for the first month, making it an easy plan to keep for occasional trips.
National Plus: A Week in the Sun
National Plus moves up to 30GB of UK data with unlimited UK calls and texts and 100 international minutes. Up to 12GB of that can be used in the EU, enough for a week of navigation, video calls home and streaming on the beach. It lists at £10 per 30 days and is currently £5 for the first month.
UK Plan Super Extra: Europe Plus Trips to India
With 75GB of UK data, unlimited UK calls and texts and 100 international minutes, Super Extra suits heavy users at home. It allows up to 12GB of roaming data in both the EU and India, so the same SIM works for a holiday in Spain and a visit to family in Delhi. It lists at £15 per 30 days and is currently £7.50 for the first month.
UK Plan Unlimited: Long Stays and Remote Work
The top plan offers unlimited UK data, unlimited UK calls and texts and 100 international minutes, with the largest roaming allowance in the range at 35GB in the EU and India. That is the plan for a month-long tour, working remotely from a villa or sharing a hotspot with travel companions. It lists at £25 per 30 days and is currently £12.50 for the first month.
Before You Fly: A Quick Checklist
- Pick a plan whose EU data cap matches the length of your trip and how much you stream.
- Activate the plan and renew it a few days before departure so the 30 days cover your whole holiday.
- Check that data roaming is switched on in your phone settings before you land.
- Note your plan renewal date in your calendar so your roaming data never runs out mid-trip.
- Save 112 in your contacts as the free EU emergency number.
Final Thoughts
For a short city break, the Smart plan covers the essentials, while National Plus suits a week away. Families who also travel to India get the most from Super Extra, and long stays call for the 35GB roaming allowance on UK Plan Unlimited. Whichever trip you are planning, a travel SIM for Europe with roaming built in lets you enjoy the holiday without watching your bill.
